Word List
because of, due to, as a result of, owing to, cause, effect, consequence, result in, lead to, bring about, trigger (cause something to start), stem from (originate from), contribute to, so, therefore, thus, consequently, as a consequence, for this reason, that’s why, since (giving a reason), because, impact, influence, outcome, aftermath (the period after a bad event), side effect, knock-on effect (an indirect result), root cause, factor, ripple effect (a spreading effect).
Examples:
- The delay was due to heavy traffic on the highway.
- Poor sleep can lead to difficulty concentrating during the day.
- The new policy triggered a wave of complaints from employees.
- The factory closure had a knock-on effect on local businesses.
Remember: «because of,» «due to,» and «owing to» are all followed by a noun or gerund, never a full clause — use «because» (not «because of») before a subject and verb.
