Animals

Vocabulary Explanation

Animals vocabulary covers the words we use for the creatures around us, from pets like a dog, a cat, and a rabbit to farm animals like a cow, a pig, and a sheep. Wild animals live in nature, such as a lion, an elephant, and a monkey. Some animals fly (a bird, a parrot, an owl), some swim (a fish, a shark, a dolphin), and some are very small insects (a bee, an ant, a fly). Use «a» before most animal names (a dog, a horse) and «an» before a vowel sound (an elephant, an owl). Look at the pictures in the quiz below and match each one to its correct name.

Examples:

  1. I have a dog and a cat at home.
  2. The cow gives us milk.
  3. An elephant is a very big animal.
  4. The bird is on the tree.
  5. Penguins live in cold places.

Remember: some animals have a different plural form (one mouse, two mice; one sheep, two sheep; one fish, two fish).
