How Our Free English Placement Test Works
Our test uses an adaptive engine — the same principle behind official Cambridge exams (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE). Instead of a fixed set of questions, every answer you give adjusts the difficulty of the next one in real time. Answer correctly and the test gets harder; make a mistake and it eases off, just like an experienced examiner adjusting the conversation as it goes.
The result is a more accurate placement than a fixed-length test, and usually a shorter one too. Instead of working through dozens of questions regardless of your level, the test stops as soon as it’s confident about where you sit on the CEFR scale: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2.
Time and length
You have up to 25 minutes, with a visible countdown throughout. Most people finish well before time runs out — the number of questions isn’t fixed either: it’s typically between 15 and 25, depending on how quickly the engine can place you. If time runs out before you finish, the test closes automatically and shows a preliminary result based on what you’ve answered so far.

Question format
We use the same four exercise types as the Use of English paper in Cambridge exams:
- Multiple choice — pick the correct answer.
- Open cloze — fill in the gaps in a text, with no options given.
- Word formation — transform the given word to fit the sentence.
- Key word transformation — rewrite a sentence using a given word, keeping the same meaning.

What you get
When you finish, you’ll receive your estimated CEFR level (A1–C2), your overall score, a skill breakdown (grammar, vocabulary, reading), and an official description of what that level means in practice — what you can understand, say, and write with the fluency you have today.
